ABOUT

Dr Roger Wise
Founder and Director

Roger Wise founded Ultrawise in 2016 based on long experience in the welding and joining industry, as well as time in product development in a VC funded start-up which was developing dielectric resonating antennas.  He is the inventor on more than 5 patents, and has written a book, the Thermal Welding of Polymers.  He is passionate about efficient joining from perspectives of light weighting, process understanding, and design for disassembly/recycling. He has been a plastic welding consultant, specialising on ultrasonic welding support and other welding techniques for more than 10 years.

Roger has a strong interest in biological systems in both joining, for example bone fracture healing, and the development of prototype medical devices.   The prototype design process follows a 'design for X' approach from specification to realisation, driven by regular reviews with an experienced team who represent the priorities features and functions of the product.  More recently, he has been very active in the development of power electronics modules which can be recycled using solvolysis.  In collaboration with Tribus-D Ltd, and other supply chain partners of the last 8 years (to 2025), this development has progressed to the point where a working prototype half bridge module has been disassembled to permit the reprocessing of the constituent materials.  Ultrawise Innovation was most responsible for the choice of the encapsulant, its proper application, and its reprocessing.  A similar technology has been employed in the development of a lightweight electric bicycle which can also be disassembled for recycling at end-of-life.

In 1999, Roger Wise gained his PhD in ultrasonic welding from the University of Cambridge, and published a book, the Thermal Welding of Polymers.  He has co-written extended reports for the UK's Knowledge Transfer Network, one on the Technology and Current Market Trends for Carbon Fibre (2016), and the other on the reduction of CO2 emission in the polymer processing industry (in press).
